Welcome to our Premier Issue of CrimeAlert

Over the last few years our Business Watch Program has grown beyond all our expectations. It has allowed the Police Department to share crime trends, wanted subjects, and prevention tips in an almost real-time environment. Our success would not have been possible without your continued support and feedback. However, as with any growing program, we have expanded to the point that our infrastructure can no longer handle the volume of subscribers. The situation is allowing us to head in a new direction and provide an even better service in a more familiar format.

Business Watch will be transitioning from a strictly email format to a web-based application on Touchpointec.com. You will still receive your daily reports in your email but the appearance will change. We are switching to a newsletter format that will be much easier to read and digest. The application will also allow us to specifically target certain business segments with additional information that might be relevant from time to time.

Please let us know if you have any issues with the new application. We are committed to providing this service and want this change to increase the success of our program. Chief Wilfong

Sincerely,

Terri A. Wilfong
Chief of Police

About the Crime Analysis Unit

The Greenville City Police Department’s Crime Analysis unit, in addition to managing the Business Watch Program, collects and analyzes statistical crime information and disseminates this to Police Officers and Citizens of Greenville to identify crime patterns and suspects, and help in solving crimes.

A Crime Analysis Sergeant, two Crime Analysts and a Crime Analysis clerk work daily to prepare and distribute reports that can be used to identify what City locations need to be patrolled more aggressively.

The unit works closely with the COMPSTAT, crime reduction, team to identify suspects and crime pattern areas, especially in cases involving Robberies, Burglaries, Autobreakings and Auto Thefts.

Business Watch started in November of 2005 with 75 members, and has since grown to over 1500 members. Through daily emails, Business Watch members are informed of crime patterns and given updates on criminal investigations. Members have helped identify suspects and solve crimes in their partnership with the City of Greenville and the Greenville Police Department.

The Crime Analysis/Business Watch Team:

  • Tiffany Burton, who has been with the Department since August 2004, is the Crime Analysis clerk who enters various data used to run reports. She also prepares statistical reports for the public and for Police Officers.
  • Brian Harris, is a Crime Analyst, assists with the Business Watch program and prepares crime mapping. He serves as the Crime/GIS Analyst. He has been with the Department since May 2008.
  • Deb Wyant is the Crime Analyst/Business Watch Coordinator. She has been with the Department since May 2003 and oversees the Business Watch program and serves as the Research Analyst.
  • Sergeant Bob Gamble manages the unit and its three Civilian employees. He is a 15-year veteran of the Police Department, and also serves as the Accreditation Manager.

Today's Crime Synopsis

Deb WyantWe are still catching up with reports since we were out of the office yesterday due to the weather. The following is a summary of new reports and some that may not be added to the report yet.

Four Autobreakings (involving five vehicles) were reported over the weekend in CHARLIE Beat -the Augusta Street area - McPherson Lane (two) and Lanneau Drive (two). It appears that the vehicle doors were left unlocked between Friday night and Saturday morning. The vehicles were rummaged through and some items were stolen including credit cards and a small amount of cash. In one case, a box containing a used Dish Network Satellite box was recovered down the street underneath a tree.

On Saturday on Laurens Road, INDIA Beat, two Autobreakings were reported, including one behind the Olive Garden in a parking lot and another at Old Time Pottery. In the case at the Olive Garden, a witness saw a white male suspect near the victim's vehicle around 4:00 p.m. She could not describe him, but said he has scraggly blonde hair.
If you have any information on open cases, please call our Investigative Unit at 467-5342 and ask for the on-duty supervisor. You can contact our tip line at 271-GCPD (4273).

Thank you, and please remember to lock your vehicle doors and remove valuable items from inside.
