Hiring Requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have or be able to obtain a valid S. C. drivers license
  • Have not had a driver's license suspension during the last five years for D.U.I., leaving the scene of an accident, reckless homicide or involuntary manslaughter
  • Have never been convicted of a felony or Criminal Domestic Violence
  • Have never been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude or a misdemeanor carrying a possible sentence of more than one year
  • Have not defaulted on a student loan
  • Have a good credit history

Once employed as a police officer, you will attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia for 12 weeks. Certified officers from other states and military police may qualify for a three-week legal's portion or a challenge test. The Field Training Program is 600 hours (may be abbreviated for prior experience), and the probationary period is one year.

Starting Salary:

  • $14.24 per hr ($31,840.64 based on 43-hr/wk)
  • +5%=$14.99 per hr ($33,517.64 based on 43-hr/wk)
    • 5% increase to base pay for prior Class-1 certified police experience one-five years
    • 5% increase to base pay for bi-lingual upon successful completion of language testing
  • +10% =$15.74 per hr ($35,194.64 based on 43-hr/wk)
    • 10% for prior Class-1 certified police experience of over five years
  • 5% stipend for Associates degree
  • 5% stipend for prior active duty military experience of at least one year
  • 10% stipend for bachelor’s degree or above
  • 5% stipend for Master’s degree
    *Any combination of the above benefits cannot exceed 15%**
     
  • +5% increase once Field Training Program is successfully completed

  • Annual leave time as follows:
    • First year of employment: 13 days
