On February 1, 2013, The Greenville Police Department responded to The Plantations at Haywood apartment complex in reference to a gunshot victim. Once Officers arrived on scene they found 3 year old Temorej Smith lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound, and Officers then attempted to administer CPR. He was pronounced deceased a short time later. Since the incident, The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has released that the shooting was accidental. The Greenville Police Department is still actively investigating the shooting; however, at this point we are prepared to release that Temorej and a seven year old sibling were playing with a pink in color handgun, which they thought was a toy. During the course of playing with the pink handgun, Temorej Smith suffered a gunshot wound. Currently, no one has been arrested or charged in this case. The Greenville Police Department would like to stress the importance of gun safety, and it is imperative that firearms remain locked at all times, and out of reach/discovery of children. Furthermore, we would like to reiterate that anyone in need of a gun lock can obtain one from the Police Department located at 4 McGee Street.
