Boyfriend Charged with Murder of Live-in Girlfriend

Kierre Laquen Smartt

The Greenville Police Department today announces it has arrested a man in connection with the murder of his live-in girlfriend and dumping her body in a heavily wooded area about ½ mile from the couple’s shared apartment. The body of the deceased victim was located on Friday, September 14, 2018, off Dallas Road in Greenville.

Kierre Laquen Smartt, 34, is accused of killing 34-year-old Shafeque Geniece Berry on or about September 11. Smartt reported Berry missing at 10 a.m. on September 11. At the time, Smartt told officers they went to sleep together at 10:30 p.m. on September 10, and he awoke two hours Iater to find her gone.

GPD investigators say that story did not add up.

“During the investigation, our detectives uncovered video recordings that we believe show Smartt left his apartment on the morning of September 11, drove onto Dallas Road, and returned approximately eight minutes later,” Captain Howie Thompson said. “Evidence collected at the crime scene indicates that Berry was carried from their apartment, and her body was placed at the location where it was found.”

Smartt is being held without bond in the Greenville County Detention Center. His case has been transferred to Greenville County General Sessions.
