‘Good Samaritan’ Arrested for Involvement in Abandonment of Two-Day-Old Newborn

(GREENVILLE, SC)- The woman who originally presented herself as a “Good Samaritan” in the reported abandonment of a two-day-old newborn on November 10, 2018 has been arrested for Filing a False Police Report.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, November 13, the Greenville Police Department (GPD) asked for the public’s help in locating the mother of a two-day-old infant after she allegedly left the newborn in the care of a random passing motorist without warning. The story garnered an enormous amount of media coverage and public attention, which generated a number of tips to GPD detectives.

Since that time, GPD investigators have determined that the entire story was fabricated.

Monique Yolanda Jackson, 34, of Pensacola, Florida, who represented herself to GPD officers as a “Good Samaritan”, has since amended her initial statements about what took place on the night of November 10. Investigators have established that her participation in this incident was intentional and was part of prearrangement to assume custody of the newborn.

Accompanied by her attorney, Jackson surrendered to GPD detectives on Friday afternoon and was formally charged with Filing a False Police Report, a municipal-level offense.

The actual mother of the child has been identified and is being investigated by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) for her involvement in this incident.

Investigators have also determined that the birth of the child occurred outside the jurisdiction of the GPD. Accordingly, the GCSO has assumed the lead role in this case with the GPD working cooperatively as requested.

Questions about the role of the birth mother should be directed to Lt. Ryan Flood, GCSO PIO, at (864) 467-5205.
